What Is Shockwave Therapy?

Shockwave therapy uses mechanical acoustic pressure waves to stimulate the body's natural healing response in injured or chronically irritated tissues, particularly tendons and other soft tissues affected by persistent pain. It may be a useful treatment option for conditions that have not responded adequately to other treatments.

Shockwave therapy is commonly used for selected musculoskeletal conditions, including:

  • Plantar fasciitis: Heel pain, especially with the first steps in the morning or after rest.
  • Achilles tendinopathy: Achilles tendon pain and stiffness, worsened by activity.
  • Tennis elbow: Outer elbow pain with gripping, lifting or repetitive movements.
  • Patellar tendinopathy: Pain located directly beneath the kneecap, typically worsened by high-impact movements or deep knee bending.
  • Rotator cuff-related shoulder pain: Pain in the shoulder, typically aggravated by overhead movements, lifting, or sleeping on that side.
  • Greater Trochanteric Pain Syndrome: Pain on the outside of the hip, typically aggravated by lying on that side, prolonged standing, walking, or climbing stairs.
  • Other soft tissue conditions: Certain muscle pain and myofascial trigger points.

How We Approach Shockwave Therapy at Kaizen Health

At Kaizen Health Physiotherapy in downtown Victoria, BC, our approach to Shockwave Therapy combines targeted treatment with appropriate load management, movement retraining, and progressive strengthening to support recovery and lasting improvement. We use advanced radial shockwave technology from STORZ Medical, an established Swiss manufacturer specializing in medical shockwave systems.

Shockwave Therapy is rarely used on its own. Following a thorough assessment, your physiotherapist will determine whether SWT is appropriate for your condition and how best to integrate it into your treatment plan to restore function and support long-term recovery.

With specialized training in Shockwave Therapy and over a decade of combined international clinical experience, our physiotherapy team has helped athletes of all ages, recreational sports enthusiasts, and workers with repetitive strain injuries manage pain, restore function, and return to the activities they love.
